When asked how long he’s been acting, Kamary Phillips will say he’s been acting and playing the fool his entire life, when in fact he’s been a stage and screen actor/entertainer over 20 years. The majority of that time spent within the European entertainment industries.
It’s interesting to note that Kamary’s last English theater production was Eric Begosian’s “Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll” and that was way back in 2003. Kamary comments, “Yea, I’m due for another play, I know. I’m lame. I love live (performing) too! But don’t make it sound like I’ve done nothing since then. I’ve been doing German productions for Christ-sakes! English is cake by comparison.”
Kamary’s last English feature film role was horror-jock Olaf Ittenbach’s 2008 thriller “Dard Divorce” where Kamary shines as anti-hero Detective Carrey.
“Dard Divorce was a fun picture to do. No one’s ever asked me to do a horror type flick before and when Olaf approached me and explained the process, I was jazzed right away. Cool, creepy makeup. Guns, exploding cars, action. I die. Right on!” Kamary adds, “I had just come off another film where I was the #3 actor on the bill and even a bit ignored I thought from the Director. I’m old school I guess, where I actually expect a Director to direct. Call me a nut. Anyway, that experience sucked and I was anxious to move on. I’m a Directors actor. I like to try different things. Olaf was cool.”
Kamary Phillips considers himself a Character Actor. Others have pegged him for lead roles. “I think I’m more of a Whitaker, Freeman, Poitier type of Bruva. Jackson, Washington, Smith... all amazing but not me man. The nature of this lies within their names themselves. Think about it.”
I would anyway of course, cause I love it.” He continues, “There are far more gigs out there for character roles than the leading dude-guy thing. I just want to work first and foremost on fun, professional projects, you know? That’s how I make a living man!”
Kamary Phillips has written several screenplays since the turn of the century with production credits for a few. Click here for a look at some of Kamary’s literary works.
